Chapter 9

Pain throbbed in Stacia Dolce’s head. It wasn’t just the babysitting that was bothering her. She actually didn’t mind watching her younger brother and cousins. The house was alive with emotions, and like Aunt Irina, she felt them all.

They pummeled her. Exhausted her.

Mom told her to block them.

As if...

Just as Mom couldn’t block her visions, Stacia couldn’t block any of it. She saw, heard and felt everything. And there was just too much in the house right now.

Usually she loved having the gifts she had, and she enjoyed being a witch. But then there were times, like today, that she just wanted to be a regular teenager.

The door to the attic playroom creaked open and Mom stepped inside the space. She glanced over to where the younger kids played the virtual computer game Uncle David had set up on a big screen for them. It was cool having a techie uncle.

Stacia’s whole family was cool, though. Even her mom...

Most of her friends complained about their mothers. But Stacia had a bond with hers that nobody else had with theirs. She and Mom had nearly died together. But her dad had saved them. He’d been just Joseph then. But after that he had become her dad.

He called Stacia her mother’s mini-me since she looked so much like her. That was cool, too, since her mom was really pretty with pale blond hair and light blue eyes. But Stacia was nearly taller than her now, so Dad wouldn’t be able to call her mini-Mom much longer.

After she’d made sure the younger kids were all right, Mom walked over to Stacia. She touched her hair. “Headache, sweetheart?”

Her mom wasn’t telepathic with anyone else, but it was as if she could read Stacia’s mind. And Dad’s.

Stacia nodded.

“I’m sorry,” Mom said. “I know this must be overwhelming for you. Everyone’s so scared and upset.”

Stacia nodded again. “Even Grandma.”

“She’s here?”

“She was earlier. She’s worried about Aunt Maria.” She reached out and squeezed her mom’s hand, which was shaking a little. “You are, too.”

“Have you seen what I have?” her mom wondered.

Tears stung Stacia’s eyes. “Yes.” Like the tears, the vision burned her eyes. And the pain overwhelmed her. She didn’t want to start crying and scare the younger kids. But Mom pulled her into her arms, and the tears slipped out. “I don’t want them to die.”

But she had seen death. And she worried that the only way she would ever meet her aunt Maria was as a ghost—like Grandma.

Seth glanced in the rearview mirror. If there had been a vehicle behind them, he had lost it around one of the hairpin turns in the backcountry road. Even though he couldn’t see the lights anymore, he pressed harder on the accelerator.

With one hand Maria grasped the console and with the other the armrest on the passenger’s door. “Slow down or you’ll miss the driveway. It’s coming up around the next turn.”

An image flashed through Seth’s mind of what could be coming
